The WordPress Dream Theme

I’m afraid that the theme creator uses one of those awful generic selling templates to advertise the theme, which put me right off straight away. He really should have just used the theme to advertise itself. I only persevered with it for you, dear readers.

The WordPress Dream Theme was developed by Ben Cope, the Internet Genius as a magazine-style theme. It offers a option page for making changes without tweaking code, and the usual home page featured post functionality.

His price includes an hour of customization, but if you don’t mind customizing your theme yourself you could save $147 by buying Brian Gardner’s Revolution Magazine, or indeed many of the other magazine themes. It’s too bad that there isn’t an option to purchase the theme without the customization option for a cheaper price.

On the other hand, by purchasing the theme you’re guaranteed an individual interaction with the theme’s creator, and the higher cost will limit the number of other people using the theme, which definitely makes for a premium experience.

Fjords09 and the Digg Theme

A great-looking magazine theme by Peter Andre Jensen, Fjords09 uses custom fields instead of special categories for those featured articles near the top.

Peter Andre is currently running a competition for a copy of this theme (and copies of his Digg theme for five runner-ups) for subscribing to his RSS feed via email.

Portfolio Press

Portfolio Press was created by Magnus Jepson, who uses the theme to showcase his own theme designs. He includes Photoshop psd files with the theme to facilitate the customer’s customisation of the theme’s header or entire background.

BlackMaster

A theme which features some great ajax/js navigation effects. Play with the demo to see how much fun it is. I’m not crazy about the default colour scheme, but look beyond that to assess the potential of this theme.

WP Sorted

I’m not a fan of all of WordPress Sorted‘s themes, but they’ve got some good-looking themes for those on a smaller budget.

Elite by Design

Brian of Elite by Design is selling his site design. I personally like the white space in the main content area with the touches of colour in the header and footer.

NewsPixel and Dark News Theme

RockinThemes’ first premium newspaper-style theme was NewsPixel, which has been followed by the Dark News Theme (which has the same functionality as NewsPixel). Both versions offered featured post areas at the top, plus tabbed content boxes and sidenotes.

Cornerstone is a balanced, highly customizable magazine style layout designed to serve news sites, multiple user blogs, community portals, corporate or non-profit sites, and hobbyist or entrepreneurial blogs alike.

Cornerstone was created by Charity Ondriezek of Design Adaptations, the first female premium theme designer that I’ve come across so far.

Essence by iThemes

iThemes is a collaboration between blogging gurus Brian Gardner and Cory Miller.

The duo’s first premium theme is called the Essence series, which is available in five colour schemes. It appears to be aimed at those who wish to use WordPress to power a traditional paged website, and reminds me of the original Revolution theme with those three featured sections at the bottom of the home page.
